Following my nose, I happened upon How and Why the US Government Perpetrated the 2014 Coup in Ukraine. Roughly, CIA trained/paid snipers shot into a crowd from both sides (rebel and government) to create chaos sufficient to take down the government. The basic reason was to maintain hot tensions between the U.S. and Russia, in continuance of a war-making policy initiated by GHWB in 1990.
That article, now available only through the Wayback Machine, claims that GHWB double-crossed Russia to keep the Cold War going. For taking down its empire, Russian had been promised first-class membership in the Western club of nations, including eventual membership in NATO. To maintain the possibility of global thermonuclear war, GHWB reneged on the deal.
All roads lead not only TO Ukraine, but also FROM Ukraine.
