The whole mythology was invented by George Romero in 1968. Before that, zombies weren't after brains to eat.

While Romero is responsible for the modern zombie film, he never had anything to do with them eating brains. That has not been in any of his movies.

And while the laws of physics and biology are violated all over the place in The Walking Dead, it's important to remember that everyone who dies becomes a zombie. So as long as there are people, there will always be a fresh supply of newly made zombies.

You are right. Romero gave up the "Living Dead" titles and started the his own series with Dawn of the Dead. The Return of the Living Dead (1985) started the brain-eating thing, but it wasn't his movie.
