The CHP says the bar bounced and went through a Chevrolet Impala driving behind the truck. Officials say the bar went through the car’s engine compartment and into the front passenger area, where it struck the woman in the right leg.

Officials say the driver stopped and dialed 911 but the driver of the big rig did not stop.

CHP officers and firefighters responded and the woman was taken to a hospital.

[if you leave the advised space three cars will pile between.]

My philosophy is - let them. If I’m traveling the speed limit +/- 10 mph, I’m a happy camper. Daily driving ain’t a NASCAR event. They don’t award prizes for the first place finisher.

Leave the space - better some other idiot gets the bad karma than you. I’ve been driving semi trucks for over 22 years and will simply slow down when someone rides too close to my back end.

True, but now there is a car in front of you to absorb any debris coming off the truck that's now in front of them.

Yeah, it’ll “buff right out,” right?

Trucks and trailers will cut you off. Of course they sometimes have a “you must keep 200 feet behind this vehicle, not responsible...”

Then don’t cut me off. Especially on highways that say “no truck in left lane”.

I haven’t had metal fall from one of these things but I’ve had my share of stones from uncovered loads.

The vast majority of them use retreads which are nothing more than cheap tires than can come unglued any time.........

I can't believe that retreads are legal.

Yes but isn’t it better to let people cut in and take up that space than to be right behind a huge truck?

Hey a shield is a shield, but...either way you don’t have the safe distance in front of you, and that’s what the main complaint was, now you’re changing what you’re objecting to.

When I am in the vicinity of any vehicle carrying a load, I get away from it very quickly, I have seen numerous loads not secured well.

Actually it doesn't happen that often, and when it does it makes the news. I'm a trucker.

The states do NOT put flatbed operators in a skills test. At all. It is OJT and there is rarely a set curriculum.

The last 2 fatalities I've seen were people following too close to a semi. I have ppl follow me too close every single day, and don't get me started on the texting. If the general population were fined the same way truckers are....it would cease immediately.

Drivers do not carry the tool to tighten lug nuts. They are set my torque every 6 months. It the entire wheel detached, that was probably due to a busted hub seal that overheated and detached when the metal melted. That is the drivers fault for not checking.

Well, you seem to know a lot about me, for not knowing anything about me!

Just the same way you sure know a lot about her, for not knowing anything about her.

There are however two things I do know about you for absolute facts. Because you yourself told me these two things about you.

I know for an absolute fact about you that you hold yourself to different and more lenient standards than other people.

And I know that you have limited driving experience at highway speeds because if you had as much experience as most people my age have (and not just me specifically) you would have seen at some point how fast a falling piece of steel can reverse itself and how far it can fly.

There is a third thing I know about you.

You get angry and nasty when anybody dares to defend someone else from your ill thought little diatribes.

There isn't much else I would ever need to know about you.

Wow, what a close call. In high school, shortly after getting my driver license, I was driving parallel to one of the holes at our local golf course. An errant ball bounced off the road not far in front of me headed straight for my head. It sailed over the car, just missing the roof.

Later the same year an unsecured sheet of plywood sailed out of a pickup truck in front of me and went over my car. In a slit second, I figured I was going to be decapitated, but me and the car escaped without a scratch.

Nothing like those two incidents has happened in the 52 years since!

Pot calling the kettle black. You made an accusation about me in your first post. I will respond accordingly. I don’t get angry, that’s your ignorant assumption, probably based upon your own personal faults.
Get over yourself, and your petty complaining, I’m not here to babysit. EOM

On Washington 290 east of Spokane they painted lines across the road and posted signs “Three lines is safe distance.” It’s really helpful to establish safe following distance.

It’s a two-lane 55 mph road.

Probably just an educated guess from daily observation that most people follow one or two car lengths behind every vehicle in front of them.

YouTube is full of Russian car cam videos. It’s a miracle that any Russian arrives at his or destination alive.
