Just Imagine is a 1930 science fiction musical-comedy film, directed by David Butler. The film is known for its art direction and special effects in its portrayal of New York City in an imagined 1980. Just Imagine stars El Brendel, Maureen O'Sullivan, John Garrick and Marjorie White.
The film starts with a preamble showing life in 1880, where the people believed themselves the "last word in speed". It switches to 1930, with the streets crowded with automobiles and lined with electric lights and telephone wires. It then switches to 1980, where the tenement houses have morphed into 250-story buildings, connected by suspension bridges and multi-lane elevated roads.

“Spandex jackets - one for everyone...”
Wonder if they imagined California - where people freeze hungry in the dark despite abundance.
The German view, however .
Very interesting, I can’t believe that I was unaware of this film, even though it made was only 20 years before I was born.
I must have been out of the loop.
Were these flying cars recalled?
Great film!
Love it!
(And not only because of Maureen).
Everyone: watch it!
There were supposed to be flying cars in 2015 according to Back To The Future (a movie from 1985). So we should get busy because we are already late buy 4 years.
I remember seeing that movie about 50 years ago - I could never remember the name - thanks for posting
We were supposed to have colonies on the moon by 2001. Where are the moon colonies? Where are the Pan Am space planes to take us to Station V? Where is Station V? Where is Pan AM? What universe am I living in?
What is she sticking in her mouth? Why is there a blinking PAN AM sign in the background?
We are living in the future
I’ll tell you how I know
I read it in the paper
Fifteen years ago
We’re all driving rocket ships
And talking with our minds
And wearing turquoise jewelry
And standing in soup lines
We are standing in soup lines
Interesting. I recall watching an old movie from that era (probably at the recommendation of a freeper thread) that was about a country that, iirc, had isolated itself and kept up a fake war to keep it’s people in control. The technology they had was before the engine and electricity iirc.
Then a helicopter / air balloon type thing lands. It is from something like the U.N. where the entire rest of the world has joined together in a utopian world with no fighting.
I probably have some of that wrong, and I can’t recall how it ends - but it is interesting to see how they viewed the future.
Probably a tribute to Kubrick's 2001. Pan Am Airlines was still in business through the 1980s, though not much longer.
We could all have had autogiros by now, but people just had to hold out for flying cars.
Lol. And we were supposed to to have reached Mars in 2001, Space Odyssey.
Sounds like the shape ofThings to come
With raymond Massey.
Set in a dystopian England
After a war.

YES! I knew some Freeper out there would figure out my poor description. Above is the link to the film. Done in 1936, based on the story by H.G. Wells.
