The stock market was closed during the week following 9/11/2001 which fell on a Tuesday. The markets reopened the following Monday morning, September 17, 2001. The dow had the largest collapse in history. A couple of hours after the close of the market, that sundown closed the Shemitah (7 year period) and Rosh Hashannah (Head of the Year or the Jewish New Year) began at Sundown to start the next 7 year period. Coincidence? Maybe!
Seven years later on September 29, 2008, the Dow dropped 777 points, the largest in history and following the failure of Lehman Brothers.
