It’s the “in FRONT of the mountains” part that makes the difference. Although, sometimes being “in FRONT” means taking the brunt of storms passing through; St. George gets slammed, and Hurricane gets the tailings.

In this instance, front is actually at the southern base of the mountains. If you've been to St George, (IIRC you have "folks" here) you know it curves around the base of a major mountain -- Pine Valley Mountain. The storms come from the north, essentially, and for St George, the mountain blocks them.

Hurricane is to the side of that mountain, in a valley. Hurricane may be as low as St George, but its also in a bowl, open at the north. In order to get to St George, or Cedar City on the other end, we have to climb. We also have to climb from St George to here. St George is not as cold and doesn't get the winds that we do.
