Since I've been to Basel, I'll check the numbers here:

Plane:

Air France - non-stop, Basel to Charles De Gaulle AP, Paris, 1 hour 15 minutes $166.

Train:

Basel SBB to Paris Garde de Lyon, nonstop (no transfer), 3 hours 9 minutes, $199.60

Hmmmm.... What would you do, slower, more expensive, or faster and cheaper????

Wow, higher fare on the train even with all of the subsidy and government control. Who would have thought.

Of course, it takes close to an hour to get from central Paris to CDG via the RER trains, then you need to be beyond security at least 45 minutes before the flight goes. At the Basel end, the airport is a distance outside Basel (it is shared with Mulhouse, France and Freiburg, Germany).

So the trip takes about the same amount of time whether by air or rail.
