Try the "https everywhere" browser extension. It is from the EFF (electronic frontier foundation". They have been all about security for years.

You do realize that it only “sends a request” to the site to use HTTPS “if available” right? If it is not available from their end, or there are any 3rd party API scripts that don’t support HTTPS you are still wide open.
