“...I alawys wonder how Alcee Hastings was ever able to serve in the House after his impeachment, conviction and removal from office....”

If I remember this right he was impeached as a federal judge for bribery, tried for back his home district and the jurors just could bring themselves to convict their “home town boy”. So he got elected to Congress and as been there ever since!

thanx.
i understand what happened. I was wondering why it was allowed.
I couldn't seem to find out what the punishment was for Hastings. Transcript has to be somewhere.
It seems only removal from office, but the Constitution says:

Judgment in Cases of Impeachment shall not extend further than to removal from Office, and disqualification to hold and enjoy any Office of honor, Trust or Profit under the United States: but the Party convicted shall nevertheless be liable and subject to Indictment, Trial, Judgment and Punishment, according to Law.

maybe the Senate has leeway re: punishment ? which it doesn't seem so.
or election to the House of Senate are not considered Offices of Honor, Trust or Profit?
