There was optimism that the new psychopharm drugs were going to take care of a lot of people. There was naivety over how well people would adhere to their medication regimen. So, in today’s mental hospitals, people look and act more or less normal, because they’re medicated properly. Back in the day there was nothing to be done but tie them down till it passed.
