I suspect at least one of his parents was thinking that items X, Y & maybe even Z could use repair or replacement, but they didn’t want to be The Bad Guy and pop his idealistic bubble.
Some children from comfortably middle-class or above families do not want for any material thing, and as such don’t have a full grasp on what money can do for anyone.
He’s just a teenager, so there is plenty of time to learn other lessons. Meanwhile, it’s great to think of others.
I agree with you. I hope there was some consultation with his family before this decision was made. If nothing else, the family should have been able to keep whatever expenses were made in connection with the animal for which he won the award.
Possibly they do not need the money and/or there is some family reason or sentiment for donating to St. Jude’s.
I expect his family is very proud of him, regardless.
