The shooter responsible for shooting people Saturday evening between Midland and Odessa, Texas, has been identified as Seth Ator.
Police told CBS News that Ator, 36, was a native of Odessa. He hijacked a U.S. Postal Service truck and began a shooting spree in Midland on Saturday that killed seven and injured at least 19. Midland law enforcement say Ator then traveled east toward Odessa, where he continued the deadly assault. Police report he was then shot and killed by authorities closing in on him.
Midland police took to social media to warn residents to stay in their homes and off Interstate 20 as they worked to secure the situation.
Odessa Police Chief Mike Gerke said in a press conference Saturday evening that one shooter had been shot and killed by police in Odessa after traveling east on Interstate 20. Early reports suggested that more than one shooter could have been involved, but authorities believed the rumor began when Ator left his own car and hijacked the government vehicle.
At least 19 people were wounded, and seven were confirmed dead Sunday. During a Sunday afternoon press conference, Gerke refused to name the gunman, saying Youll notice that Im not naming the subject, and theres a reason for that. I refuse to.”
