Abe, speaking Japanese with a translator nearby, congratulated Trump on the birth of his 10th grandchild.
Abe said the US-Japan relationship is strong and that there is robust trust between the two countries.
He said that the G7 could send a powerful message about solving global challenges.
Trump on a trade deal with Japan: Were working on one and were fairly close.
Asks Lighthizer, who said: Hopefully as a result of this meeting well be able to come to an agreement about core principles.
Q: did you sign off on Macron speaking to Iran on behalf of the G7?
Trump: No I havent discussed that. No I havent.
I also support PM Abes outreach, because hes also speaking to Iran... Well do our own outreach. But you cant stop people from talking. If they want to talk, they can talk.
On his lunch Saturday w Macron:
I think it was the best hour and a half Ive ever spent with him...and yet I picked up stories and I read the opposite.
On Russia rejoining the G7, Trump said its an ongoing discussion, claims he was surprised that some leaders agree with him but he wouldnt say who when asked.
