I think topography is the word you're looking for here. Topography is about the varying elevation across an area of land.
Topology is the mathematics of things in a very general geometric sense, independent of measurements. Topologically, a sphere and a cube are the same, because you can stretch one into another without tearing. But a sphere and a donut are different, because there's no way to transform one into the other.
