I read an essay once that analyzed like a million odd elections and determined that in politics, likability trumps money.

Freakanomics (Levitt & Dubner 2005) explores this concept with some real good data. The book has other counter intuitive conclusions that data say are wrong. The guys that wrote the book are very brave men.
