Albania has a very old and rich history, with a dizzying number of occupations by various ethnic groups and countries. The coast would have been well traveled at least from the time of the first Greek colonies.

The latest occupation was by Mussolini's Italian army. He launched his invasion of Greece from Albania, where he was promptly defeated. Hitler had to delay the invasion of Russia to come save his bacon.

Post-WWII the place was very weird. IIRC, the commie regime was allied with the Chicoms before the fall of communism.

Their dictator, Enver Hoxha, was a real piece of work, he believed he was the only true Communist left, everyone else was a "revisionist".

Still later Albania purged all non muslims in a forced exodus.

In an article I think on the RPM website, it said that the late dictator Hoxha prohibited scuba gear, claiming it was cryptocapitalist or some such crap -- but he was worried that people would swim underwater to flee his dictatorship. One unintended consequence of the policy is that the many wrecks were never found until now.
