239 were in for sex crimes & 59 were in for violent assault.
This is being taken out of content for the sex crimes. It was 18 to 20 years old males tossed in jail for having sex with their 16-17 year old girlfriends and then labeled a sex offender. I’ll have to check into the 59 voilent assaults had not heard of that one yet.
Tucker didn't give the details of every crime & I'm sure we will never know. Additionally, were were a large number in the category of "weapons & explosives".
I don't know what the President knew of this bill, but ultimately "the buck stops here" at his desk - he signed it.
Sen Kennedy voted against it & did not like it from the beginning.
I was under the impression, as with the lady reunited with her family, that it was low-level drug offenders, who were "over" charged by mandatory sentencing. The penal system had thoroughly reviewed each on a case-by-case basis & determined they had been "rehabilitated" & were worth of a second chance. That's who I thought was getting out.
My theory is that in general, people go to jail for a reason - because they deserve it. Only a few should get a reprieve.
