Your equating the car and the horse may not be correct. As I understand it, and please correct me, to be on foot in Indian country was a death sentence during that time.

Being in the wrong part of town at the wrong time or perhaps any time can be a death sentence.

Still is. Just that these days, "Indian Country" has moved to the inner cities.
