In that same vein, one of my best friends served in our nuclear sub fleet in the '70s (part of the triad).
He told me that, at least initially, the Soviet nuclear fleet did not hit upon the correct engineering solution of surrounding the nuclear core with water tanks to shield the crew against radiation.
Steel alone was insufficient.
So by the end of their one-year assignment, those crews were walking dead men. They were secretly awarded the honor: "Hero of the Soviet Union" and allowed to live out whatever remained of their lives.
