Or it could be that regulations have driven up the cost of new cars to be unaffordable.
Maybe unaffordable is too strong a word - they don't have value equal to their price.

All the electronics replacing mechanical elements makes a lot of people wary as well. It adds additional points of failure without commensurate value. Do I really need a microchip in my starter?

I've had 3 new Chevy pickups since 1990. I run them into the ground, and have replaced 1 water pump through all of that, tires, brakes, and that's it...
Got a 2015 Z71 LTZ crew cab right now and looks like it will last the same as the previous two.
My FJ40 is 52 years old, has been beaten to death 4wheeling across nevada and looks like it just rolled off the show room floor. My lexus suv is 20 years old, and just needs a wee bit o paint. Since I graduated college in 1992 I have purchased exactly 4 cars and still own 2
