People always seem to forget that Hitler formed his Brown Shirts in self-defense after his first rallies were broken up by gangs of communist thugs.
Back then (early ‘20s), there was no TV or radio, and the German newspapers were heavily Marxist. So rallies were the only method of public speech. It was standard practice for communists to break up opponents’ rallies—not just those of the nascent Nazis. Bolsheviks had recently taken over Russia, and they were attempting to accomplish the same thing in Germany. Many German cities were already governed by “Soviets.”
Hitler was a WWI veteran who had fought bravely in the trenches for years. He knew a lot of veterans, whom he enlisted to defend his rallies against the communists. When they showed up the third time, he met force with force. Arguably, he stopped Germany from becoming part of the international communist movement led by the USSR.
I am not apologizing for Hitler. He was personally responsible for the genocidal holocaust which murdered millions of non-combatants. I’m just relating some facts of history, fwiw.
