I believe this is at the root of black resentment. They have been in America since the beginning, yet every new group, no matter how reviled at first, seems to pass them by when it comes to economic success. They, as a group, seem to be stuck at the bottom regardless of individual exceptions. I understand their resentment.
So they ask the question, “Why?”. To too many of them, the answer is “racism”. It is so easy to blame others for one’s own shortcomings.

As to the ‘real’ answer to the question “Why?”, any attempt to figure that out is instantly branded as ‘racist’.

In “A Night to Remember” (1956) the author suggests that some of the more than 100 stokers laboring in the bowels of the ship were black.

A stoker who survived recalled scrambling up the ladder and seeing a black stoker slumped against a bulkhead, empty of hope, and singing to himself,
