VP is chosen by the Presidential nominee of the party. People may suck up to POTUS in hopes of knocking him off the ticket but Pence will not, cannot be primaried.
Personally, I don’t see POTUS changing horses in the middle of the stream. I think it would hurt his re-election. If Pence decides not to run that is a different matter. But I bet he is in it to win too.
