New paint technology is much lighter. The Air Force could save a bunch of $$ with a stripping and new paint job just in weight (fuel consumption) alone. Give a good chance to inspect for corrosion as well.

Yeah, a bunch of paint can add some weight. The first few External Tanks for the space shuttle were painted white. No real reason other than aesthetics. We quit painting them and saved about 600 pounds that could go towards payload weight. Not to mention time spent painting them and inspecting and meeting govt inspection requirements.
