I was born in 1947. About the only way we got to watch those cartoons was at the movie theater. They’d be shown before or in-between a double feature. Our local theater also used to have Saturday morning cartoon jamborees, where you could go and see about 50 cartoons back-to-back. Besides Warner Brothers, they’d show Popeye, and I think we used to see some Harvey cartoons, like Casper The Friendly Ghost, and probably some others. Once we got a black and white TV, the earliest cartoons I remember watching, besides the ones aired by Disney, were Mighty Mouse, Heckel and Jeckel, and Popeye.

The first ones I remember on TV were silent cartoons from the 20s and 30s. Of course they had dubbed music, but they had dialogue cards, so you had to read to be able to fully ‘get’ them. They typically featured a bearded farmer and his assorted farm animals. Lots of mice—not Mickey though. To see the good cartoons you still had to go to the movies. Then Disneyland came on TV.

"I was born in 1947. "

1948 here.

When I was about ten our local supermarket would provide free passes to the Saturday matinee for kids. My younger siblings and I would look forward to watching the cartoons and maybe a western or space man short.

Not all cartoons were created equal. We very much looked forward to our favorites. I especially liked Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, The Road Runner. I was unamused by some of the older cartoons that featured depictions of Hollywood actors or singers. I seldom knew who they were supposed to be and the gags didn't seem funny at all.
