Insanely vain vanity: WHY??? Why do people park backwards???
dangus

Posted on 05/28/2019 2:42:37 PM PDT by dangus

I can't handle it anymore. My curiosity has burned for decades about this, and I finally decided that hey, there's a thing called the internet so I can ask:

Why do between about 1 in 5 and 1 in 10 people insist on parking backwards, despite the fact that it's obviously MUCH more difficult. I always get stuck waiting for these people why they try over and over to straighten their cars out. WHY?

I can't detect any trend in demographics... young v old, north v south, city v urban, white v non-white, men v women... just a consistent portion of people who INSIST on blocking me for fifteen minutes while they park backwards! Please... I'll just presume you're someone who can do it in one move, every time and never cause massive jams in parking lots... someone just tell me WHY you do it!!!

I drive a 2010 4 door fx4 f150.

If I take an extra 5 seconds pulling into a spot, that saves me 10 or more pulling out, clearing it quicker for the next guy.

I’ve heard UPS drivers basically arent allowed to back up because that’s when most accidents happen.

I don’t usually back in to parking places, but I usually try to pull through. As someone else said, those places tend to be farther away so I get a few steps more exercise as well.

People don’t look or pay attention. Backing into another vehicle would be annoying, but backing into a pedestrian would be devastating.

It’s not just people who walk or drive through parking lots who don’t seem to pay attention. I live in a very small town and have twice in the last week nearly t-boned other drivers. One ran a stop sign and the other made a left turn directly in front of me. Neither one seemed to even notice I was there, and my vehicle isn’t all that small.

An accident is more likely leaving than entering a parking space.

Backing out reduces visibility sideways both because it is behind the driver and because the driver is farther from the lane.

Backing in blocks traffic without causing an accident, and provides better visibility when pulling out.

It’s you.

We hate you.

We want to make your life hell.

So we do whatever we can to tick you off.

And now that we know this particular thing bothers you so much...

We’re ALL going to do it.

It’s known as “Tactical Parking”, it allows for quick escape and a better ability to observe what’s around you and puts in a position to for fight or flight.

GQ is no longer considered machismo. I canceled my ‘free’ subscription after they published an article about how loving and adventurous it is to be pegged. (Not a good thing, look it up in the urban dictionary) I was disgusted and didn’t want my children reading that. I have “The Art of Manliness” bookmarked right under Freerepublic and let the children read that now instead

Because of the asshats who speed down the lanes and seem to want to hit cars trying to back out of parking spaces?

I see it much the same with regard to the differences in sexes on things like this, I find it both illuminating and entertaining...:)

There are many women would see this conversation and roll their eyes and wonder aloud why we have to analyze something as mundane as this...before rolling their eyes...:)

To which we would say “What?”

You’re a dumbass that you have not been able to figure this out on your own.

Wow! I guess you're the smartest person in the world, except that smart people don't go around calling others 'dumbass.'

In the Army we call it combat parking a vehicle, and it’s SOP. Most people with prior military experience park this way.

#1 It's called combat parking so it's just cool.

#2 Have you ever driven a fork truck. They turn from the rear giving you perfect control of the placement of the forks in the front. You get the same geometric advantage by backing into a parking spot.

Yes, it is an advantage for some one driving a larger vehicle.

Why do people tail gate?, why do people drive in the wrong lane?
why do people start making a left turn from the out side
lane then cut over to the inside lane while turning?.

because most drivers could not even pass a driving test if their
life depended on it.

It depends on the situation whether backing in makes sense.

Why do people do this in angled parking lots? Not pull through, but drive the wrong way up a row to get to a spot so that they can back in. Is it so they can get out faster and then make everyone going the right way move?

If you are comfortable backing in or you are required to do it, fine. I tried it, but never liked it. It is easier for me to drive forwards into a small area and back into a large area. For most drivers, that is probably best because they lack the driving skills to back into a spot with a car on either side. I also tend to park away from other cars, so it doesn’t really matter. I have a clear view backing out, and I can pull forward it necessary. I get more exercise, too. I don’t have the problems that the back in crowd cite, so why should I back in?

despite the fact that it's obviously MUCH more difficult.

1) No, it actually isn't. It's just a different skill from parking "forward". It's also a related skill to parallel parking.

2) Unless you can pull through, parking will always involve going backwards at some point ... either on entry to or on exit from the parking space.

3) Backing into the parking space involves reverse direction driving into a static environment. Backing out of the parking space involves reverse direction driving into a dynamic environment.

By “backwards” do you mean opposite to the direction of traffic?
