There are places out there that have good people. You just need to have faith that they're there. But local law enforcement also knows well enough to advise "outside aid" to steer clear away. More than enough "revenuers" have gone in and never come out again.
My first guess, too.
Because it comes from an institute of higher learning they COULD insert a statement in the conclusions:
The study of merging the light trails with real-time coincident data from Flightaware.com or Flightradar24.com has been:
1) designated for additional research or
2) left as an exercise for completion by the reader
Brown Mountain has been exhibiting these lights for a very long time. Some say the local Indians had tales of this from the 13th century. Many people have seen these lights over the years. They even referenced them in an X-Files episode.
My astronautical engineer son believes they are ball lightning objects and says that recent research is strongly leaning toward this phenomena at Brown and several other locations where these manifest themselves. App State has been working on this for some time now. Itll be interesting to see where it goes.
They are trying to find intelligent life, but they met Hank Johnson, Maxine Waters, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Richard Blumenthal...so they left...
I have been several times to observe the Brown Mmountain lights. Waiting and looking get pretty boring. Having a streaming camera is definitely the way to go.
I can not claim to have ever seen them.
Filmed? What, like Super 8 or 16 mm? Who uses film anymore?

You were in fact a baffeled yankee
Our technology is more than a hundred years advanced from what the public is allowed to know. Probably one of ours (TR4B)
Well, having been a field investigator with MUFON, I would guess the Brown Mtn Lights are the result of methane released then illuminated by a pizo electric discharge due to rock stresses in transition.
When I was at ETSU Washington County was beer only ... as witnessed from my job tending bar at The Crows Nest, handling the liquor bottles of deputies, police, and sheriffs ordering set ups.
There are ‘still’ places in Sullivan County where it is ill-advised to walk into, usually know by the added identifier of ‘holler’, as in Cardin Holler, etc.
A family member worked security for Los Alamos and Sandia Labs. Remember the Chinese "scientist" caught with an unauthorized USB Drive? My relative briefed the President on the incident.
It amused me to ask him about stuff he wasn't allowed to talk about. He would share about declassified stuff (the Atomic Airplane was one of his favorite stories) but he would get annoyed at my questions. After one such question, he turned to me and said...
"You like science fiction, right? Think about where you think we are technologically, add about 100 years, and you're still not close."
A friend works for AFRL and we saw the Captain America movie where SHIELD had flying aircraft carriers together.
At the dramatic moment where the flying aircraft carriers are shown for the first time he went into giggling fits.
After the movie I asked him what was so funny. He kept waving me off and changing the subject.
Finally, hours later, when we were having dinner, out of the blue he said, “Ya know, they don’t look anything like that at all.”
It is January so I don’t think bugs.
However, giving the time of year you can have ice crystals in a very cold sky (even if not very overcast) than can reflect terrestrial light. The crystals are in motion so the reflected lights won’t appear in the same space frame after frame. When they seem to move, they’re moving at speeds commensurate with faster vehicular traffic.
