The rule for a communications carrier is that they have nothing to do with the content of their messages delivered.
For example, if a surgeon is talking his colleagues through a difficult operation via a phone call (far-fetched, I know) and the phone call is disconnected, causing the patient to die ... there is no liability on the part of the phone company.
Likewise, a phone company is not liable for crimes that are carried out or pornography transmitted through their network.
This is the line FB and TWTR have apparently crossed, when the got involved in policing the content of their platforms.
Of course, they have to get involved in the “Content” if they are going to make money off of it.

So true, right now these tech companies are taking advantage of being called a private company where they can censor whatever they please.
I've read about some good solutions for the future as in regulating them as utilities or establishing an Internet Bill of Rights. All that is still up for debate but I do like how President Trump put out the Tech Bias form online so Americans can share their stories of tech bias. I think he's using this to build a case against them for possible future solutions or even building criminal cases.
The reason I state building criminal cases against them because even though they've shielded themselves with the protections for a private company, we've understood for some time they have been working with the shadow government. That's just more uncharted territory there.
If anyone has a story of tech bias, be sure to let our President know, I did last week. I do believe all of Silicon Valley is involved so if you suspect something, say something. From what I've experienced, I do believe the Google "merit" system is already here.
