I recall back in the 60s while homeported in Yokosuka, when the Carrier Group would come in the prices would rise...I mean the prices of EVERYTHING.

The fleet is in had significance.

Of course ‘just plain old price gouging’ would be handled by place being put ‘off limits’ and in certain instances a ‘dungaree liberty’ may be involved.

Nothing helps an economy better than an R&R being ‘allowed’ when the serviceman is coming from ‘Indian country’ with a pocket full of back pay.

So, in a respect, the occasional vist of a bird farm and her escorts would raise the price for the few days they may be there BUT would also help to keep the prices down after they were gone.

The locals were not so dumb as to run off their ‘regular’ customers while taking advantage of increased numbers.

One would think the ‘boy from Brooklyn’ would have enough street smarts to realize the game of no prices - even when the menu says ‘catch of the day or steak cut of the day varies, check with server’ as a frequent visitor to ‘dens of eniquity’ would realize a red flag being raised.

The old saying ...If you HAVE to ask how much it is, chances are you can’t afford it... fits.

If you want to get ripped off then save the airfare and go to New York or San Francisco.

New York can be a bargain if you know where to stay/eat. I normally pay $65 per night in midtown, and eat lunch for $7.

3 caesar chicken @ 59.40
6 KA AMAPI @ 591.00
6 local beer meta H @ 150.00
2 NEPO @ 17.80
1 AMITA NTOMATA @ 18.00

If the last 3 items are drinks (beginning at the beer), it looks like there were nine people eating.

YEARS ago, there was a "Last steam train" ride to some place in Mexico. The LA Times sent down a reporter ahead of time to meet the train.

He's sitting there, having a drink, when someone rushes in and yells "Americanos aqui!". The owner of the restaurant calmly goes over to a menu hanging on the wall and flips it over. Prices quadrupled.

It’s one of the most expensive club spots in the Med.

The only thing that ‘really’ mattered was the ‘price of p going up’.

Everything else, food, meals, drink (EM or PO club) berthing could be handled elsewhere....

I would ‘volunteer’ for Shore Patrol (not while fleet in- there was ‘work’ involved then) and find out where the real ‘hot spots’ were, though I was an E5 in a ‘non SP duty role’ would stand by for an E6 or E7.

Not ALL spots marked off limits were because of how the indegenus citizenry ‘treated’ us, some just didn’t want us aboard but SP was ‘always’ welcome...

Quite a difference in prices in the ‘native section’ than the waterfront bars offered which was plenty cheap enough.

The next to last item is water, probably sparkling water.

staffers at the restaurant on the southern end of the Greek island near Platis Yialos Beach refused to provide a menu with prices before he and his friends placed their orders

That should have been his first tip. Never eat without seeing the prices first or you'll get scammed.

There are no prices at their website.........

Evidently they are notorious for screwing tourists based on the reviews at their site.

Here's detailed one:

Aussie tourist

11 months ago on Restaurant Guru

THIS IS A TOURIST SCAM...98 euro for a single shrimp...Australians, Americans stay away!!!!!! Tell other people so that your friends/relatives do not get robbed in the same way I did. I was a solo diner and they gave me a 150 euro bill - for 4 dinners, they might charge you 600 euro for a small meal!

It is not merely a matter of exorbitant prices at this place, they try to actively trap/trick tourists and slap you with a ridiculous bill that has no basis in reality. I ordered one glass of house white wine...no price list.

When the bill came...20 euro! The seafood only has prices 'per hundred grams'. They recommended the jump shrimp, which was 17 euro per hundred grams - they told me it would be 200 grams, but then brought over a bill for 150 euro, including 98 euro for a SINGLE shrimp!!! It tasted fine, but you would have to have a mental condition to willingly pay $130 AUD + for a single prawn.

I obviously argued with them and said I was not paying that. Eventually they said the shrimp was only 400 grams, so 68 euro. SO THEY WERE LITERALLY TRYING TO ROB ME BY CHARGING ME 96 EURO - THEY JUST CHARGED ME WHAT THEY DECIDED TO CHARGE ME, IRRESPECTIVE OF WHAT I ACTUALLY GOT...INSANITY.

It is easy to forget that Greece is a third world country - but the proprietors at DK Oyster Bar are there to remind us of that!! The bread, which I thought was complimentary turned out to be 7 euro for three dinner rolls; a bottle of water was 8.50 euro; the oysters were shrivelled and barely edible at 6.60 euro (more than 10 AUD) a pop.

Worst meal experience ever...I feel shaken and upset. Please avoid this place at all costs, especially if you are a lone or female traveller. Some female US tourists seemed to be getting similar treatment..so mine is not a one off case.

Best of luck - Platis Yialos is beautiful aside from this terrible (and in my view criminal) establishment. If I could give it a sub zero rating / claim victims compensation I would...

The receipt shows 1 tomato juice is $20. Ridiculous rip off.

Caesar chicken is nothing but chicken baked with caesar dressing. To fancy it up, sprinkle some cheese and hit it with some minced herbs. Big whoop. That costs nothing to make but he was charged $23 each - ok, there’s overhead.

But $20 for a tomato juice is ridiculous. It doesn’t say anything about alcohol in it.

The best I can find for nepo is milk.

$56 per beer is a rip off. They could have got the whole keg for that.

For $662, they could have rented a party boat and invited half the town to dine on calamari.

Reminds me of a few years ago when hubby took me out for Mother’s Day. He splurged on steak and shrimp. Well, that’s exactly what was on the plate a steak and a little bitty frozen Gorton’s shrimp.

Νερό (pronounced neró) is the common Greek word for water.

That’s even more innocent than milk. It’s obvious this guy and his friends were just out having a nice quiet little lunch. It’s long past time for the US to let them protect their own sorry countries.

The unsatisfied soldier said staffers at the restaurant on the southern end of the Greek island near Platis Yialos Beach refused to provide a menu with prices before he and his friends placed their orders

When you're in the Third World, you always ask the price of a service, be it a cab ride, a shoe shine, or a meal at a restaurant before you accept it.
