In support of my thesis is this thread by Neon Revolt. It outlines a possible agreement between the previous Italian govt and Hillary Clinton to plant devastating info on Trump's servers that - when discovered - would force him to vacate the White House.

Indeed! The way I read it and figured is there was 2 parts to this, the narrative where the Russians hacked Hillary's emails and the Italian intelligence was going to plant them on those Trump related servers.
I'm guessing this was to be the smoking gun where it proved Trump was working with the Russians. With this overwhelming evidence, they were hoping President Trump would have no choice but to step down. I'm glad the second part failed.
