There was a big push for elite bunker building, during the last years of the Obama administration.

An architect friend of mine, originally apprenticed to one of the biggest names in 20th Century architecture, was getting calls from billionaires to build them bunkers.

He turned them down. He asked them, "What kind of world do you think you'll see when you come out of your bunker? Would you want to live in it anyway?"

Hell, I don't like getting up every morning and seeing the "brave new world" we've already in. Coming out of a bunker on the "day after" would be infinitely worse.

Your friend seems to be short sighted. Not every disaster would be an end of the world scenario.
