A fair plan...
I took a deer through the windshield of a small sedan one day [without a scratch to me] and am constantly vigilant now.
I have occasionally seen [dead] elk on US191 between Gallatin Gateway and Big Sky. Even with a small SUV, I don’t want to mix with them. Then there are the occasional Big Horns...
That sounds awful.
I was driving one night in the left lane of a freeway when the car ahead of me suddenly swerved violently and then dove all the way to the right shoulder. I saw copious quantities of blood and scattered body parts. Directly ahead was a torso, which I could not avoid; it felt like I hit a log. All of this happened within a few seconds. I suspect that the car ahead of me was totaled, from the way it handled when its driver swerved off the road. My car was damaged, but the damage was not apparent until months later.
As I said before, the strategy of staying behind another car to avoid hitting deer works... sort of.
