Yes, the circular openings along the bar were for the large jugs of wine from which it was dipped for customers. Pompeii had a bar on just about every corner, as befits a prosperous resort community that liked to party.

Openings make sense now. I remember some less savory establishments which probably served wine too. Less savory by our standards I suppose.

Yes, the circular openings along the bar were for the large jugs of wine from which it was dipped for customers.I thought they were for pots of fondue with small fires underneath to keep them hot. What's a bar without free snacks? :)
