I guess online polls are now worthless

They've always been worthless. That tool just makes it worthless in favor of your point of view.

Can that paywall killer get you into members only sites such as Ancestry.com or is it just for MSM sites, and how does it know the difference?

I’ve had a lot of success with the Bypass Paywalls addon. Also uBlock Origin with Nano Defender does a nice job of stopping those, “We see you’re using an ad blocker. Please disable your ad blocker to view this page” messages.

No

It only gets around 'soft paywalls' - which used to be most of them. The Wall Street Journal just implemented a 'hard paywall'.

Bookmarklets are mostly JavaScript which only modifies YOUR computer - they do not touch anyone's server - which is why they are legal.

Many paywalls work by giving you a 'cookie' - this thing deletes them all, thereby resetting them.

Or it reroutes your path to the magazine, like for FT - it sees that you are trying to read FT; grabs the title of the page, then reroutes you through the FaceBook referrer, where you can read the article free!

Using “Paywall Killer” is a bit confusing. For a WSJ article this morning, it killed their cookies, then redirected me to the WSJ Twitter feed which yielded nothing.

I tried it a second time, then clicked on the third (of three) hits in Twitter and it did open the WSJ page. Hallelujah! I used the “Reader” button in Safari to kill all the crap on the page and I got to a clean page of text only.

Is that normal behavior / operation? i.e., to redirect to Twitter or some other page?

WSJ is a tough one now. It can no longer be cracked with soft paywall killers.

So now you can no longer read the WSJ for free unless someone else comes up with a hack.

The Twitter redirect trick sometimes still works for the WSJ. I have no idea why.

If I knew, I could code it to be more consistent!

Yes. It checks the URL and if it's FT.com it redirects via Facebook which avoids the paywall. If it's the WSJ, it tries a Twitter redirect which still sometimes works if all cookies are cleared and the cache refreshed! Other online content has other solutions all are automatic.

You can read:

And many, many more all while maintaining the economic boycott of the corrupt and biased MSM.

There are a lot of other tricks in those bookmarklets... killing cookies and clearing the cache opens up a lot!
