circa 1960 Civic class trip to Washington DC exposed us to that fact. Judge asked defense atty. if he was ready to proceed defending his client against burglary charges. Defense requested a delay until their witness Mr. Green returned to the city. Delay granted. On the bus ride back to school our teacher explained that waiting for Mr. Green was common code for the lawyer waiting to be paid. No green, no defense...keep sitting in jail.
