Just thought of something about Putin. Here’s a snippet from Wikipedia:
“Putin was born in Leningrad during the Soviet Union. He studied law at Leningrad State University, graduating in 1975.[6] Putin was a KGB foreign intelligence officer for 16 years, rising to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel before resigning in 1991 to enter politics in Saint Petersburg. “
Did KGB do what the CIA seem to be doing, planting intelligence officers in the government to increase control by other means?
I think that may be the case, but add in the Mockingbird effect of CIA with the media and academia and the puzzle pieces start to fit together.

The USSR was dead broke in 1991. They could not even pay government workers or military their salaries. The country was facing starvation.
The proximate cause of their bankruptcy was the precipitous crash in the price of oil, but that's another story.
The real reason was communism is a fatal disease, as an economic system.
In communist USSR, the only real economy was the black-market economy. When the official economy imploded, only the criminal (black market) kingpins had any money.
As the government sold off its assets--whole industries including petroleum--the criminals joined forces with the only remaining power in government--the KGB.
The criminal kingpins became "Respectable" ... sort of. They are now known as oligarchs.
Russia is now run by this merger of KGB and "Criminal" kingpins.
I use "" quotes, because these businessmen were forced onto the criminal path by communism. So there's that.
Anyway, Putin obviously thrived in the resulting power alliance. He is now one of the world's richest men.
