A former judge in North Carolina was arrested after engaging in a sex act with a teenager at a hotel in Asheville, police said.
Daniel Ray Green, who now works as a real estate attorney in Hickory, was arrested early Sunday after cops responded to the Baymont Inn following a report of a sexual assault of a 14-year-old victim at the hotel. The child was “known to the suspect prior to the incident,” a spokeswoman for Asheville police told the Asheville Citizen Times.
Green, who was named the North Carolina Bar Association’s Citizen Lawyer of the Year in 2018, declined to comment when reached by The Post, referring calls to his attorney, Lisa Andrews Dubs. She did not immediately return a message seeking comment Tuesday.
Green, 64, is now facing two felonies and two misdemeanors in the alleged incident, including first-degree statutory sex offense with a child under 15 and disseminating obscene material to a minor by watching pornography with the teen.
Green also allegedly gave the teen alcohol, according to warrants cited by the newspaper.
Green, according to his website, has served two stints as a judge in North Carolina, first as a District Court judge for Catawba, Burke and Caldwell counties between 1984 and 1986. More recently, he sat on the bench as a Superior Court judge from May to December 2002.
Green is known for his “wealth of legal experience and a reputation for good service” throughout a career spanning nearly four decades, his website claims. In 2017, he returned to private practice, focusing on real estate, personal injury, wills and estates.
The North Carolina Bar Association has also praised Green as embodying “every sense of the phrase ‘citizen lawyer,’” noting his devotion to the community last year.
Green was released from custody after posting $75,000 bond. A judge told him during his initial court appearance Monday that he could face up to life in prison if convicted, WSOC reports.
Green has also previously served as the chairman of the Catawba County Democratic Party, according to his website. The organization’s current chairman said he was “absolutely stunned” by Green’s arrest.
“I’m really at a loss for words and we’ll just have to wait and see how this plays out,” chairman Ric Vandett told WSOC.
