I believe that Smithfield was indeed purchased by the Chinese Shuanghui Group in 2013. Where do you find information that someone else purchased them?
Last summer while on vacay in upstate PA, I had this very discussion about the security of our heparin supply. Maybe it was not Smithfield, but Hatfield, or another company. But the locals said the large pork business was taken private by Mennonites, the Chinese do not have it, and that the owners were very patriotic. I will keep looking, but did not see anything on my first pass before coffee...
