My favorite Russian word was the imperative form of stop, останавливаться. I always wondered if that appeared on a stop sign.

According to Wikipedia, every country in Europe -- except Turkey -- uses a stop sign that says "STOP". In Turkey, it's "DUR".

I should have known that was wrong from the get-go. The French, for one, wouldn't put up with that, nor the Germans. The shape of the sign is international. The wordage is not.

What made me think I could trust Wikipedia?
