After owning a plane, being a pilot, living on an airport for the past 25 years and also knowing many military pilots... my guess is that there is a higher proportion of people with herpes in the astronaut community than the general public. Lack of sleep and being in a stressful situation is a trigger for herpes. I am sure that being in space is stressful for a lot of different reasons. The article mentions some of these factors. It might be something that will disqualify some for being considered for “deep space” missions. But they probably have 100 candidates for every opening they fill. If they eliminate half of them for being herpes positive they will still have plenty of other candidates.
I was just thinking how much I’ve been enjoying these funny posts which reminded me of the hilarity on threads back in the Clinton years (which sadly got deleted when JR changed over the system c.2000.)
