An eight-year-old boy who fled Nigeria with his family and is now living in a homeless shelter in New York City while his asylum application pends has been crowned the state's chess champion for his age group.
Tanitoluwa Adewumi won the state tournament for his group, from kindergarten through third grade, last weekend.
The boy and his family fled their home in Nigeria in 2017 in fear for their lives and have been living in a homeless shelter ever since while their application for asylum pends.

good for the kid, but why is our country so stupid? the father is a realestate broker, i would think they make good money, why are they living in a shelter and not renting a place to live? I’m sure they are collecting some sorts of govt helps.
No wonder foreignors do so much better than many of us born and raised USA Citizens they get helps while also working a nd making income.
I understand they fled from religious persecution.
Although you are technically right, what do you think the intent of a story like this is with respect to the current national discussion on immigration reform?
