Here:
The 777X is a two engined efficient long range beauty. The A380 is a four engined monster that’s already filled its niche.
“Weren’t we just told that the world didn’t want any more ‘big’ airplanes? Airbus cancelled production of their big A-380 airplane.”
Big airplanes that can only fly into big hubs is the problem, the 777X can fly to smaller airports, the A380 can’t.
A380 is a 4 engine monster vs 777 2 engine.
For a rough comparison
A flight LAX to SYD
the A380 will use about $245,000 in fuel for 484 seats
A 777-300ER will use $140,000 in fuel for 361 seats
(don’t know the fuel numbers on the new 777)
(2 class seating on the 777-9 will be 414 seats)
MTOW Max Takeoff Weight
777-9 775,000 lbs
A380 1,268,000 lbs
The A380 has a 261 ft wingspan
The 777-9 has 235 ft, with 11 ft tips folded it’s 212 ft.
Few airports have the reinforced runways for the A380
or the wider gate areas.
The 747-8 has a wingspan of 224 ft
and a MTOW of 987,000 lbs.
It also has 4 thirsty engines.
the 777 and the 787 were the two planes that killed the a380; two engines, not four.
The Airbus a380 is an overall larger plane than the 777X). In addition to having two seating decks instead of one (the 777X has one), and four engines (777X has two) it has a larger total payload capacity than the 777X.
The max passenger capacity of the Airbus a380 is 500+ while it is only 425 for the 777X. All specific capacities are selected from what is possible, and depend on the airline’s chosen sesting configurations.
What a shame, I fly Emirates alot and have flown on the A380 alot and in Business class, it was out of this world, the 777 does not come close in my opinion.
