When I started teaching in the NYC schools, i came in two days before the kids with the rest of the staff. My assistant prin handed me a class roster, a red binder attendance book and a set of room keys, shook my hand and said “ Good luck”.

As a hiring manager, I gave applicants a chance to ask questions at the end of an interview. Questions like “How much vacation time will I get?”, or “How long will it take to get promoted?” were red flags.

My wife is a millennial and she comes up with every excuse in the book.

Every morning there is a checklist in her head that has to be met to start work.

Also, since I’m hiring now, I’ve been working with some people of varied backgrounds and age ranges.

People younger than I (38 at the oldest) simply don’t do what they say they will. Ever. They don’t show up when they say they will, they cancel appointments, they ignore their phones for hours too. I can’t figure this one out. I have seen this in NY, PA and now AR.

It drives me up a wall !

So far, I see the bigger problem as:

1) Not showing up for the interview.
2) Not responding to the job offer.
3) Not showing up for the first day of work.
4) Not showing up for the second day of work.

If a Millennial can get through all four of these steps the chances are pretty good they will work out. In our experience, about 80% don't.

I can only assume it is government school-related - they have been taught the "corporations are evil" mantra for so long that if anything makes them feel the slightest bit uncomfortable, they think nothing of just vanishing without explanation.

According to our HR manager, 80% of workers dismissed for cause, were fired for attendance. And he says that figure has been increasing gradually since the 50’s.

I thought Baby Boomers were bad but what will be left after the Millenials.

***************

The Millenials’ lack of a work ethic does not bode well for the country. Maybe the incoming foreigners will drive the economy forward but the Millenials don’t seem to be interested in working to elevate our standard of living.

Not saying they should aspire to become wage slaves, debt accumulators, or a cog in the economic machine but it seems there’s an underlying lack of motivation to accomplish anything akin to building a career or achieving prosperity, but of which contribute toward a growing economic pie.

I don’t like the terms “Millenial,” “Gen X,” or “Gen Y.” It’s stupid to assume the same characteristics for people born at a certain time. As bad as astrology.

But yes, people who have been subjected to liberalism and public schools do not have the same value system as us old folk.

Good post. In the manufacturing trade I’ve heard it referred to as OOBF (out of box failure). If a product is going to fail it usually fails right out of the box...

On my first job as an aerospace engineer my manager told me ‘Forget everyting you learned at uni - we’ll teach you everything you need to know.”
That was the beginning of my education. The only thing a diploma proved to them was that you had some ability to stick with it.

Standardized test scores are still worth something. High school and most college grades, not so much.

What they don’t teach in schools:
You show up early. You bust your butt. You stay late. You get a paycheck with a lot of money taken out of it in the form of taxes. You get no recognition on a daily basis. If you do a good job you get to come back the next day to do it all over again. When you do something really good your boss says something like “Thanks for doing your job”.

Starting in the mid to late 60’s the government public schools have been brainwashing students with Liberal propaganda. They’ve produced uneducated and brainwashed Liberals by design. The colleges and universities finished the brainwashing and we have decades of Liberals out in the streets and working in companies all over this country. Far too many parents turned a blind eye to what was going on as they turned the rearing of their kids over to the government.

Cleaning out the education system has got to be a priority!!

Millennials have been messed with from Kindergarten on up. They don’t even know which bathroom to use. Not their fault though, it is our fault for letting this crap happen.

When I was younger, I worked as a kitchen designer in a big custom cabinet company in Kansas City, MO.

I worked closely with the production manager, who had to keep the production line running putting out cabinets.

His biggest problem was not machinery or materials not being delivered or cabinets being built wrong.

His biggest problem was keeping guys he hired to stay on. Some would just walk off the job at the morning lunch wagon break and not come back. And that was on their first day at work!

Others would start to call in the morning, saying they had overslept, couldn't get their car started, were sick, etc, etc, etc.

The production manager was a sharp guy and would have none of it. He spent a lot of time firing and then hiring to replace workers. It was usually around the bottom 10-20% who turned over constantly.

Seems like nothing changes over the years. Some people are prepared and capable of working. Others are just not employee material.
