sorry you got caught in it but it's not the first time that tax deductible stuff is no longer tax deductible or has a floor when previously it didn't.
over time, we learned to live with it and\or figured out different tax strategies...still didn't stop us from complaining about it or trying to get it changed. so welcome to the club...
