I’ve been thinking about that “murder of crows” thing. Here’s my guess: Back in the Victorian era when those odd general terms for groups of animals were created, there were murders. And in those days it probably took a while to discover the body perhaps not till next morning. So, a murder of crows means about the number that you’d find pecking on a dead body laying out on the street or in a park.
