The Myth of the Healthy Sweetener
by Andrew Olson
Whether it comes from a sugar cane, a maple tree, a corn kernel, a beet, or an agave plant, your body doesnt play favorites. Sugar is sugar. The specific glucose, fructose, and sucrose molecules that we define as sugar are essentially the same. Nutritionists will argue that our bodies treat glucose, fructose, and sucrose in different ways, and this is true (see note below), but the chemical composition of sugar molecules is beyond the scope of this article. For our purposes, we can assume that our body treats those 4 grams of sugar equally, as it eventually does. Natural, processed, or somewhere in-between, the sugar is recognized as what it is: sugar...
There is a ton of research that points to the negative health effects of these artificial sweeteners, but it doesnt take a clinical trial to understand that ingesting lab-made chemicals isnt good for your body. Despite the industrys best efforts to discredit negative research, these products have been linked to cancers, and they may also mess up your metabolism and actually cause you to gain weight because your tongue tastes sweetness but your body is not getting any calories. Any way you spin it, these chemicals are no good and I almost always avoid them...
Refined white sugar, corn syrup, brown rice syrup, and agave nectar had virtually no antioxidants (less than 0.01 on the scale), maple syrup, brown sugar, and honey had more (0.2 0.7), but blackstrap molasses had a whopping 4.6 this puts 100g of molasses on par with a serving of blueberries....
Nature produces plenty of sugar, but it does so in a very specific way. Sugar is almost always accompanied by fiber (which helps your body process the sugar safely) and often includes a wide range of vitamins and nutrients (think of fruit)....
Having maple syrup on pancakes after a long run is perfectly fine, and you shouldnt feel bad about making energy bars with a high-fiber grain and a little brown rice syrup. The point of this article is to highlight the myths that we have surrounding presumably natural, healthy, or safe sugars. https://www.oneingredientchef.com/healthy-sweetener/
Your coffee concoction sounds yummy!
What is good about Mejdul dates is they are larger but the pit is small, so there is more to eat and the taste is uniquely yummy. 2 or 3 dates is all I need for a quick burst of energy to head to the gym for treadmill & light weights lifting for an hour every other day. Next year I will be lighting 80 candles and the gym is the main reason I stay out of the doctor’s office. Icall the gym as my beauty salon because it makes one beautiful from inside haha..
Ditto here!
My border line diabetic situation is pretty much gone with 15-16 hour fast 5 days a week. It cured my insulin resistance. I eat anything and everything during the 8-9 period usually between 10am & 7 pm.
Far more than gold my FRiend
I’ll have to give them a try. I doubt they are sold in my neck of the woods but I’ll look and then maybe I can find them on line. Thanks for the tip.
Did any of this help?
Best store to buy Mejdul dates is Aldi, because same size container is $1.++ cheaper.
Yes, I learned about Monkfruit. Saw it in the store last night.
