I have a friend who, after I moved away, she started to cheat on her husband, then her husband found out, was angry and they had a very rocky time and then she somehow lost her mind. She has tried to commit suicide, she’s been diagnosed with bipolar (she’s 40, she never had it before!), she is completely paranoid and makes up the craziest stuff, everyone following her, spying on her, dropping chemicals into her shower, famous people are involved, there’s a billion dollar international plot against her, etc. I can’t even deal with her texts any more.

She sometimes says she is planning a suicide, sometimes she says her son also wants to commit suicide, she was put in the hospital for a while but she is back out, it seems we are the worst to the people who need the most help. This woman should not be out, living alone with her teen son, driving a car. And yet she is. Nothing can be done. She takes no responsibility for her infidelity and blames everything on her ex. And now she is too insane to even carry on a conversation. She’s actually scary to me and I feel so frustrated I can’t help her. My texts are “please get some more help.” Which she mocks and then disappears for months.

Sorry to unload like this. Real life is complicated.

That’s awful. I would limit my contact with the person too. All you can do is pray for them.
