Actually, I overestimated Mantle's 1956 salary. According to this it was $32,000, and he got a big raise to $60,000 the next year if this is correct. $100,000 was his highest salary.

Of course, these salaries were years before free agency existed. Players were practically owned by the first team they signed with.
