Why did he not fire Sessions if Sessions was not up to scratch?

I think Trump’s criticism of Sessions was pure Sun Tzu type theater.

Have you forgotten that Jeff Sessions was Alabama's favorite son who gave up his US Senate seat to be President Trump's AG?

Firing Sessions would be far more complicated than firing (your example Tillerson). President Trump wouldn't want to risk losing the solid support of Alabama's voters.

Sessions' recusal was not necessary. He allowed himself to be bullied and worse yet, he recused himself without first consulting with President Trump!
