Graduating HS in 1971, I was disgusted that a majority of my classmates had sympathies for socialism and communism.

Lots of young people flirt with Socialist philosophies during their college years. Generally they do not survive First Contact with the real world. What is different today is that people are moving through their 30's and into their 40's and are not letting go of it.
